1. How long does it take to receive the SSL certificate?

Usually the certificate will be generated and delivered to your email within 3 minutes, some may take longer, but it will not be longer than 15 minutes.

2.  Is the SSL certificate created by OSE a self signed one or is it signed by a trusted CA like Let’s Encrypt?

All SSL certificates are signed by Let’s Encrypt.

3. How do I change the permissions of the .well-known and acme-challenge folder?

Please refer to this tutorial for how to change the file permissions: Tutorial.

4.  My ACME-Challenge test failed with 403 or 404 error, what should I do?

Most of the time, this is because your Apache server or Nginx server has some configurations that blocks the access to the .well-known folder. Double check it or check with your hosting provider and ask them if they can change the setting to allow the direct access to the .well-known/acme-challenge folder.

5.  I have waited for more than an hour but haven’t received the SSL certificate, what should I do?

The SSL certificate request takes only 5 minutes to complete. If you haven’t received the SSL certificate, you can try to:

  • Change an email address and try again
  • Check the junk folder of your email and see if the SSL certificate email is dropped in that folder.
  • Refresh your browser in the OSE Free SSL plugin page, see if the SSL has been loaded into your website.

6. I have received the SSL bundles. I’m not sure how to open it or where to find the actual code.

You can extract the zip file, then use a text editor to open the certificates. Alternatively, you can:

  • Login your WordPress backend
  • Open OSE Free SSL plugin page
  • Refresh the page
  • Check the section ‘About your SSL certificates’, your certificates should have been loaded
  • Click the Copy button to copy the certificates and choose your control panel for the instructions to install the SSL certificate here: Installing the SSL certificate

7. Can I install my WordPress website under a sub direcotry to request the SSL certificate, e.g. www.abc.com/wp/?

No, ACME will need to access the www.abc.com/.well-known/acme-challenge folder directly, so you will need to install your website under www.abc.com in order to request the SSL certificate.

8. How can I redirect all www traffics to non-www traffic?

In your public_html/ directory (or httpdocs/ directory in your are on Plesk servers), open the .htaccess file, and add the following codes, it will redirect all traffic from www to non-www domain, e.g. all traffic from https://www.abc.com will be redirected to https://abc.com.

#redirect all www requests to non-www.
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.(.*)$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%1/$1 [R=301,L]

9. My .well-known directory shows 403 errors, how can I fix it?

If your server is Apache server, please add the following in your the Apache configuration file:

<IfModule mod_headers.c>
<LocationMatch “/.well-known/acme-challenge/*”>
Header set Content-Type “application/jose+json”
Order allow,deny
Allow from all

If your server is a Nginx server, please add the following to your Nginx configuration file:

location ^~ /.well-known/acme-challenge/ {
allow all;
default_type “text/plain”;
